Presentation: "A Spectrum of Obsessions: The Intersection of Autism and OCD "

Presented by: Melanie Smith, PhD, LMHC, CEDS-C

Presentation Description:

Join us for an informative and practical workshop exploring the intersection of Autism and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in clinical practice. This session will provide mental health professionals with a deeper understanding of how these conditions overlap, the unique challenges individuals face, and strategies for effective assessment and treatment. We will discuss the distinctions between autistic special interests and OCD obsessions, the role of sensory sensitivities and intolerance of uncertainty, and how to adapt evidence-based interventions like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to meet the needs of neurodivergent clients. Through case examples and interactive discussion, participants will gain tools to enhance their clinical work with this often-misunderstood population.

Learning Objectives:
After completing this continuing education unit (CEU), participants will:

1. Identify at least three key differences and overlaps between autistic traits and OCD symptoms to improve diagnostic accuracy and case conceptualization.

2. Describe specific modifications to Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and other evidence-based interventions to enhance effectiveness for autistic clients with OCD.

3. Demonstrate at least two practical strategies for addressing sensory sensitivities, cognitive rigidity, or intolerance of uncertainty in therapy with autistic individuals experiencing OCD
